In today's educational landscape, digital literacy is essential. Society 5.0 represents a shift towards a highly interconnected world where technology plays a central role. This new era requires an educational system that emphasizes the importance of digital skills, preparing individuals to actively participate in and contribute to a digitally-driven society. The progression from early human societies to our current state highlights the ongoing quest for knowledge, now enhanced by digital tools. Thus, 21st-century education is pivotal in equipping learners with the capabilities to succeed in a complex, technology-centric environment. This super-smart society demands a new educational framework where digital literacy is not merely an asset but a necessity. It empowers individuals to not only consume but also contribute to the vast digital ecosystem, fostering economic and social innovation.

To begin with, the educational landscape also must recognize the diverse generational cohorts present in the 21st century. From Traditionalists to Generation Z, each group brings unique values and experiences to the learning environment. Traditionalists value logic and discipline, Baby Boomers are idealistic yet resistant to change, Generation X prioritizes work-life balance, Millennials are technologically adept and embrace diversity, and Generation Z is intrinsically tied to technology, multitasking, and collaboration. Moreover, understanding these generational traits is crucial for developing effective educational strategies that cater to the varied needs and strengths of each cohort, thereby they keep enhancing digital literacy across all ages which shown in the way our digital revolution then until now such as web 1.0 web 2.0 and web 3.0 that keep advancing each time that passes.

Furthermore, the P21 Educational Framework emphasizes a holistic approach to education that integrates core competencies such as creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration—skills essential for success in the digital era. It also highlights the importance of media, information, and ICT literacy, alongside personal qualities like flexibility, initiative, and social skills. The framework further advocates for awareness in areas such as environmental, financial, and health literacy. This educational model supports the development of well-rounded individuals capable of thriving in a complex, interconnected world.

In instance, there are called, the “Seven Cs” framework outlines essential skills for the 21st century, emphasizing the importance of Critical Thinking-and-Doing, Creativity, Collaboration, Cross-cultural Understanding, Communication, Computing, and Career & Learning Self-reliance. Each skill is paired with component skills, such as problem-solving, research, and analysis for critical thinking; design solutions and storytelling for creativity; and cooperation, compromise, and consensus-building for collaboration. This framework serves as a guide for educators and learners alike, ensuring that the education system prepares individuals to navigate and succeed in a complex, digital society. 

From this purpose, digital literacy is the confluence of several diverse skills that animate our interactions with technology. It involves critical thinking and evaluation, where one assesses information critically and makes informed decisions. Collaboration is key, as it involves working together with others to achieve common goals. Creativity is the ability to generate innovative ideas and manifest them into reality. Effective communication is essential for sharing ideas and information clearly and concisely. Reading and interpreting information is about understanding and making sense of digital content. Understanding digital culture means being aware of the norms and practices within digital communities. Online safety and security are crucial for protecting oneself and one’s data in the digital space. Lastly, functional skills refer to the practical abilities needed to use digital tools effectively.


Information Communication Technology in English Language Teaching

As for ICT it encompasses a broad range of digital tools and practices, such as Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL), Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL), and even Robot-Assisted Language Learning (RALL), which collectively contribute to a more interactive and engaging language learning environment.

The integration of ICT in ELT allows for innovative teaching methods, such as blended learning, flipped classrooms, and the use of Learning Management Systems (LMS), which facilitate both online and face-to-face interactions. Meanwhile, the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) model is to further guides educators in effectively combining technology with pedagogy and content knowledge to enhance the teaching process.

Moreover, the SAMR model—Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition—provides a framework for educators to transform traditional teaching methods into more dynamic and impactful digital experiences. As ELT continues to evolve, ICT remains an essential element in preparing students to thrive in a globally connected world.

In instance, theres a lot of kinds in learning management system, such as Google Classroom, Moodle, Schoology, Edmodo, Canvas Instructure, Quipper, etc. Besides that, In the realm of ELT, a diverse array of ICT tools (Hardware) such as laptops, smartphones, LCD projectors, interactive whiteboards, digital cameras, robotic appliances, and virtual reality glasses are employed to create immersive and interactive learning experiences. These hardware tools are complemented by ICT Applications (Software) including the Internet, websites, electronic resources, multimedia, social media, teleconferences, online discussion platforms, educational games, mobile applications, and LMS programs. Together, they form a robust framework for enhancing the teaching and learning of English, providing learners with dynamic and versatile ways to engage with the language.

While ICT offers numerous benefits to ELT, such as a wealth of resources, enhanced learning competencies, and a dynamic environment, it also presents several challenges. One significant issue is the low level of teacher knowledge and attitude towards ICT, which can hinder effective integration into teaching practices. Additionally, there is often a lack of standardized outcomes for student learning, making it difficult to measure the success of ICT implementation.

Another problem is the insufficient policy and institutional support for ICT, which can lead to a lack of necessary infrastructure and resources. Finally, the high cost and maintenance associated with ICT tools can be a barrier for many educational institutions, especially those with limited budgets.
